The Many Faces of Hypnosis

For many years, hypnosis has been used as a tool for
helping others to remember certain events or to explore
significant phases of their lives. This form of science,
which was once dismissed as being nothing more than an
instrument to be used for those who were on the therapist~s
couch, is now a significant tool in many areas of law
enforcement, personal improvement and relaxation.

Law enforcement agencies have long been utilizing hypnosis
as a means through which witnesses of various crimes are
assisted to remember critical details of either the
perpetrators or the crimes themselves. Often, these
sessions take place in a room at the police department
which is set up with a video camera that~s trained on the
witness, so that the entire episode can be recorded for
future use.

In many instances, the actual victims of a crime will ask
if they can participate in a hypnosis session to jar their
memory about the details of their attackers, as well as of
the crime. Details that may have been overlooked in prior
questioning will be revealed through hypnosis. This is a
powerful tool in helping police to trace a crime to a
perpetrator. It is not unusual to use one or more sessions
of hypnosis to get all the information required for a break
though in a crime investigation. If the witness or victim
is willing, the law enforcement agency may continue to
use hypnosis until they feel they have learned all that
they can through this method.

More commonly, hypnosis is used for the purpose of
self-improvement. In a case such as this, a wide variety
of goals may be accomplished, such as smoking cessation,
weight loss and the suspension of harmless idiosyncrasies.
More often than not, this requires more than one session,
since it literally involves reprogramming an individual~s
behavior in one area or another. After the initial session
or two, the remaining sessions are used to reinforce that
new behavior.

Hypnosis is also frequently used as a relaxation technique.
A good example might be someone who suffers from
agoraphobia (fear of public places and/or crowds). A person
like this is so terrorized by their fear that they cannot
relax. Hypnosis, by teaching relaxing techniques, helps
them overcome this condition, and allow thems to function
normally. Long after the hypnotic sessions have ended, the
patient continues to use these hypnotic techniques. Since
the effects of agoraphobia can cripple a person's life by
preventing them from normal forms of human contact, the
beneficial effects of hypnosis are immeasureable.

A Master Hypnotist is required to initiate and guide these
sessions. It is very important that one only work with an
individual who is a Certified Master Hypnotist. The Master
Hypnotist will teach the patient methods of self-hypnosis
so that treatment can continue whenever crisis strikes.
As long as it is done properly, hypnosis is safe and has
been responsible for major improvements in the health and
well being of patients who have used it for minor issues
through life and sanity threatening conditions.
